Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 五 五 (wǔ, 3rd tone) is, in Xu Shen, the elements made numeral: 五行也。从二,陰陽在天地閒交午也 — 'the Five Phases; from 二, yin and yang crossing between heaven and earth.' The form 五 shows the two lines of heaven and earth with the crossing 乂. The classics fix it as the middle, manifold number: the Yizhuan (系辞) '天數五,地數五' (the heavenly number is five, the earthly five); the Shujing (武成) '列爵惟五' (five ranks of nobility); the Shijing (鄘风) '良馬五之' (five good horses). As a free morpheme 五 means 'five,' and is benign in 五行, 五常, 五福. Honest disclosure: 五 is the number of the Five Elements themselves — on skin it is five plain strokes and reads as '5' or a star; it is abstract and wants a partner (五福, 五行) to mean 'quintessence' rather than 'five.' In Japanese it is go. The Wuxing attribution of the character 五 is itself debated (often listed Wood) — mark verify.
Cultural Story
五 is the central number of the old cosmic scheme, the five phases, the five directions with center, the 五岳 sacred peaks guarding the realm. The 書經 orders the world in fives. A gentleman tuned to 五音, the five notes before the scale grew. Five was balance with a middle, the count that held the cosmos together at its hub.
Where a Western reader can stand: Lu You (1125–1210) is the poet whose verse laments a divided realm; his running-cursive is the same forthright, emotionally charged temperament on paper. Set 五 — the number of the Five Phases, yin and yang crossing — in his hand, and the abstract count gains a living pulse. The pairing suits a client who wants a clean numeral with literary weight, not a slogan: five strokes that a famous poet once wrote in a single breath.

The number now mostly files the calendar and the body, but it keeps a ceremonial echo, the five that once organized heaven, now organizing your features and your vacation photos.
