尊 was a bronze wine vessel used in sacrifice, and by extension to honor and respect. The Shuowen links it to reverence. One 尊 (a statue) of a Buddha stood in the hall, and to 尊 (honor) an elder was core to ritual. 令尊 (your father) was the polite way to name a guest's parent without bluntness.
