Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 橘 Jú (2nd tone). Shuowen Jiezi defines 橘 as 果出江南 — 'the fruit that grows south of the Yangtze', from 木 (wood) and 矞. The tree became Qū Yuán's self-portrait: his 楚辭·九章·橘頌 opens 后皇嘉樹,橘徠服兮。受命不遷,生南國兮 — 'O majestic tree, the orange comes and thrives; given its charge, it does not migrate, born in the southern land' — and later 蘇世獨立,橫而不流兮 — 'alone and aloof in the world, upright, not swept along'. The orange stands for rootedness and uncompromised integrity. Kangxi counts sixteen strokes. Honest disclosure: 橘 means 'orange / tangerine'; it is auspicious (吉祥) in Chinese and carries no negative sense — only note that 桔 is sometimes used as a simplified variant, so use 橘 for the classical form. Safe as a standalone of steadfastness and southern loyalty.
Cultural Story
橘 was the sweet citrus whose fame began with the Yanzi Spring and Autumn tale: oranges grown south of the Huai river are 橘, but north of it they turn to the bitter 枳 — a parable about environment shaping character. The Shuowin notes its auspicious sound, and Tang poets sent 橘子 oranges as gifts of friendship. The tree's glossy leaves and golden fruit made it a symbol of warmth, home, and the south.

Read the story behind the character
Today the 橘树 grows in millions of southern yards, and 橘子 oranges are the snack of winter, peeled on trains and shared at the office. A glass of 橘汁 orange juice starts the morning, 柑橘 citrus fills the market, and 橘红 orange-red or 橘黄 orange-yellow name a favourite sweater colour. From a child's lunchbox to a holiday fruit basket, 橘 keeps its ancient promise of sweetness and good fortune.
Why this character belongs on skin
A tangerine is an orange that learned intimacy—smaller, sweeter, easier to share. The character 橘 belongs to the wood radical too, the family of trees, and in classical China the fruit meant something more than dessert. Qu Yuan, the exiled poet, wrote an ode to the orange tree, praising it for never transposing itself: born south of the river, it would bear different fruit if moved north. He saw in it the model of the faithful person—one who keeps their nature no matter the soil. That is the quiet doctrine of this small character: adapt your circumstances, never your character. Peel one and the segments divide themselves into a perfect mandala, generosity pre-arranged, sweetness apportioned for company. You have been moved around by life plenty. Underneath, the fruit stayed true. Carry the oath on your skin the way the tree carries its stubborn gold.
