Cultural Story
满 pairs water with 艹 and 兩, originally picturing a vessel so filled that liquid brims to the rim, the Shuowen says 盈溢也, "overflowing." The Daoist Laozi warns that 满 (fullness) invites loss, and the halfway state is wisest. Yet fullness was also festive: a 满杯 of wine at a Tang banquet, a harvest 满仓. The Manchu (满族) rose in the northeast and named their Qing dynasty after this very idea of plenitude. Classical life balanced the joy of the full bowl against the caution that nothing stays full forever.

Read the story behind the character
满 fills everyday modern Chinese. A child scores 满分 (full marks, a perfect score) and beams; a couple celebrates a 美满 (happy, perfect, harmonious) marriage. The apartment is 充满 (full of, brimming with) the smell of dinner, and a friend says she is 满意 (satisfied) with her new job, or that nothing can 满足 (satisfy) her coffee craving. Meanwhile the 满族 (Manchu ethnicity) keeps its heritage alive in festivals. Few characters are as warmly present at school, home, and table.
Why this character belongs on skin
满 is fullness — water rising to the brim in both sound and sense. The rivers of the fifth month swell with 满; the moon on the fifteenth night is 满; the granary after harvest, the teacup poured for a guest, the hall filled with children on festival morning — the word pours everywhere. And the tradition, characteristically, warns at the exact center of the blessing: the full moon must wane; the cup filled to the brim is asking to spill. 满招损,谦受益 — fullness invites loss, humility receives benefit — the old text says, and wise hosts still leave the glass a little short. So the deepest use of 满 is not the brim but the capacity: a heart 满了 with love that does not slosh, a life full enough to give from. To wear 满 is to accept the whole tide of it — to fill honestly, to hold gratefully, and to know the moment when enough is a kind of perfection.
