Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 石 Shí (2nd tone). 《说文解字》: 「石,山石也。在厂之下,口象形」 — the stone of the mountain, drawn as a boulder beneath a cliff-face (厂). It is a fully free morpheme: 石 alone means stone, rock, mineral. The classical weight is heavy. 《诗经·小雅·鹤鸣》 gives the locus classicus for learning from outsiders: 「他山之石,可以攻玉」 — stones from another hill can polish this jade. 《诗经·邶风·柏舟》 turns it into an oath of constancy: 「我心匪石,不可轉也」 — my heart is not a stone, it cannot be rolled about. 《易·豫》 六二 reads 「介于石,不終日,貞吉」: firm as rock, he does not wait out the day. Honest disclosure: 石 has a second reading, dàn, an old dry-measure of grain (roughly 120 catties), so a classically literate reader may hear a unit of volume as well as a rock; it is also one of the commonest Chinese surnames (Shí), and 頑石 means blockhead.
Cultural Story
石 is the cliff and what falls from it — one of the oldest pictographs, drawn as stone beneath a ledge. Myth used it as building material: the bird Jingwei carried stones to fill the sea, and Nüwa mended the broken sky with five-colored stones. Chancellors swore by 磐石, the bedrock of the state, and pharmacists ground mineral stones into medicine.

Read the story behind the character
Stone is everywhere and invisible. Kids skim 石头 (stones) across rivers; jewelers sell 宝石 (gems) by certificate; pumps pull 石油 (petroleum) from desert basins. Lime — 石灰 — whitewashed village walls for centuries and now tops up swimming pools; pebbles 石子 pave garden paths; and readers still buy 《石头记》, the Dream of the Red Chamber's other title, named for a stone left over from mending the sky.
Why this character belongs on skin
There is nothing more honest than a stone. It does not pretend to grow, does not apologize for its weight, does not hurry to be anything other than what the river and the centuries made it. 石 is the bedrock of the Chinese earth, the character carved into mountainsides to mark what endures when dynasties fold. To put a stone on your skin is to make a pact with permanence—to say, this part of me will not be negotiated away. The Buddhists speak of the mind like a rock in a stream, unmoved while the water argues. Christians built their churches on it. You, too, can carry that stillness outward, where others can see it and perhaps be steadied. A stone tattoo is not a decoration; it is a sentence you wrote in a language older than speech. Let it rest on you like the first and last truth.
