Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 读 读 (讀, dú) is to recite a text aloud. The Shuowen Jiezi (《说文解字》 言部) glosses it in two words: '讀,誦書也' — to recite writings. Xu Kai's commentary adds a beautiful image: '讀猶瀆也,若四瀆之引水也' — reading draws meaning out as the Four Great Rivers draw water. Its oldest attested use is darker than the modern one: 《诗·鄘风·墙有茨》 '中冓之言,不可读也' — palace gossip must not be recited aloud; 毛传 glosses 读 there as 抽, 'to draw out'. Mencius made it a scholar's verb: 《孟子·万章下》 '颂其诗,读其书,不知其人,可乎?' Tao Yuanming supplied the motto of easy reading: '好读书,不求甚解'. Kangxi (页1185) also records a second pronunciation, dòu, in 句读 — the classical pause-mark. 读 is a free morpheme meaning to read or to study. Honest note: simplified 读 and traditional 讀 (22 strokes) look nothing alike; pick one and match it to the calligrapher's script.

Read the story behind the character
On the subway a commuter yue du a long article on the phone, while a child du lang a picture book aloud at the table. The du zhe of a blog leaves a comment, and a student writes a du hou gan after finishing the assigned novel. The character du still marks every quiet bargain between a person and a page, wherever the light happens to fall.
Why this character belongs on skin
The lamplight falls across the page and for a moment the room disappears. Reading is the oldest form of travel, a quiet theft of another mind's weather. The character 读 itself shows words on the left and a name on the right, as if to read were to let someone else's voice move through your throat. We are the only animals who can sit still and live a thousand lives before dinner. The Buddhists call this entering another's suffering without flinching. A warrior studies the field before he charges; a lover reads the small weather of a face. To carry this word is to admit you are still curious, still willing to be changed by something written in a hand you will never meet. It is a humble mark for a proud species. Let it sit where your own pulse can find it, a reminder that the story is never finished until you turn the last page yourself.
