In the 史记, the founder Gaozu jokes that his father once called him 无赖, a good-for-nothing who could not match his brother at farming. 赖 here means to shirk or cheat, the rascal in a man. The same root grew into 依赖, to rely on, and 赖账, to deny a debt.
