Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 露 露 (lù, 4th tone) is water that arrives without rain. Shuowen, chapter 11, 雨部: 露,潤澤也。从雨路聲 — 'dew: to moisten and enrich; from rain, with lu as phonetic.' The Han commentators are unusually precise. The Wujing Tongyi says 和氣津凝為露, 'harmonious vapour condenses into dew', and Cai Yong's own Yueling Zhangju says 露者,陰之液也 — 'dew is the liquid of yin'; both are still quoted in Duan Yucai and the Kangxi. The Shijing supplies the images: 秦風·蒹葭 — 蒹葭蒼蒼,白露為霜, 'the reeds go grey, the white dew turns to frost'; 召南·行露 厭浥行露, the soaked path. Qu Yuan drinks it: 朝飲木蘭之墜露. Kangxi: 21 strokes, 雨部; Wuxing Water. Honest disclosure, twice over. 人生如朝露 (Hanshu) makes dew the classic figure for a life too short. And 露 is equally the verb 'to expose' — 暴露, 露骨, and a modern slang sense of indecent exposure.

Cultural Story

The 'Book of Songs' opens the 'Reed Bank' ode with white 露 frozen into 霜, the dew that marks the cold edge of the year and the longing it carries. A 露珠 on the morning leaf and the 甘露 a ruler was said to grant both drew on that same bright, fleeting wet. To write of 露 was to name what shows for an hour and is gone, like a confidence.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 露 is dew — water that condenses out of nothing overnight and burns off by mid-morning, which is exactly why Chinese poetry made it the standing image for how brief a life is. Honest caveat: 朝露 is explicit memento mori (人生如朝露), and the second reading lòu means 'to leak, to expose' — 暴露, 露骨 — so the same graph says both 'delicate' and 'you gave yourself away'.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A gardener wipes a 露珠 from the seedling and checks the 露水 on the tomatoes before the sun takes it. A news feed 透露 the budget figures an hour early, and a friend 流露 her relief in a single line. The same app that 暴露 the leak also sells 甘露 tea, the 露珠 ad on the screen blinking as the story breaks.

Why this character belongs on skin

露 is to bare, to reveal — the dew on grass at dawn, and 裸露, bare-skinned, with nothing between you and the air. There is a vulnerability in 露 that the other "show" words don't carry; it is exposure as an act of trust. To stand revealed, unsheltered, is terrifying and it is also the most intimate freedom we know — the lover's room, the chosen family's table, the night you stopped performing and let your real face show. 露 means you decided the cost of hiding was higher than the risk of being seen. To mark yourself with it is almost a dare to your own courage: stay bare, stay true, stay in the open where love can actually reach you. Ink it close to the skin it describes, a small wet glint of honesty that never dries. You were always meant to be seen this plainly, this tenderly, this much.
