腴 means richness of flesh and of land alike. Warring States strategists graded territory as 膏腴 — fertile, glistening with fat — and a warlord's first prize was always some 腴田, rich paddies along a river. In the Tang, a 丰腴 figure, plump and smooth, was the very image of beauty and prosperity, celebrated on the walls of tombs and in court portraits.

Why this character belongs on skin

The old poets had a word for land so generous it seemed to be breathing—腴, fertile, fat with promise. 膏腴之地: the rich earth of a river delta, silt deposited over centuries, dark soil you could push a hand into up to the wrist.
