Cultural Story
丞 shows a man caught lifting another from the water, to rescue, to help up, and so to serve as second-in-command. The 史記 names 丞相, the chancellor who stood just below the emperor and took the blame when policy soured. Every county kept a 县丞 to mind the granary and the lawsuits. The rescuer became the bureaucrat, the hand that holds the falling state.
Common words & phrases

Read the story behind the character
丞相 is a costume-drama title now, the clever minister outwitting the corrupt one on screen. 县丞 vanished with the imperial exam; you would only meet it in a period script or a museum label. The lone 丞 barely appears in speech. It survives as a fossil of hierarchy, the deputy who did the real work while the boss took the throne, a reminder that Chinese officialdom ran on assistants.
Why this character belongs on skin
Two hands, rising from below, lifting something precious out of danger. That is the oldest picture inside cheng — a pair of cupped palms rescuing a kneeling figure, later worn down into the character for assisting, for serving at the right hand of power. Every emperor had his chengxiang, the chancellor whose genius was not to shine but to hold things steady while others burned bright. There is a quiet heroism in that. The Confucian tradition ranks it high: the man who supports without stealing the throne, who answers for the work and not the applause. You know this instinct if you have ever steadied a friend through a bad year, or raised a child who never noticed your arms ached. To wear this character is to claim the strength beneath — the hands, not the crown. Ink it where it can face inward, over the heart, a private vow to be the one who catches.
