Cultural Story

铀 has no classical past: uranium was isolated in Europe only in 1789, and the character is a modern coinage, metal radical plus a phonetic, for the element named after the planet Uranus. No ancient alchemist ever held it; its ores sat unremarked in granite for all of recorded history before physics found them.

Common words & phrases

• 鈾礦 uranium ore
• 濃縮鈾 enriched uranium
• 鈾元素 uranium element
• 鈾核 uranium nucleus

Read the story behind the character

Uranium is the heaviest word in energy politics: 鈾礦 in news maps of mining regions, 濃縮鈾 headlines about enrichment levels, reactors and 鈾核 physics in every treaty debate. Students meet the element on the periodic table's last row of stability, and documentaries track the 鈾 from mine to containment — power and peril in one character.

Why this character belongs on skin

In 1789 a German chemist pulled a strange heavy metal from a mine named for St. George and named it after a newly found planet—Uranus—so 铀 entered Chinese carrying the sky in its metal radical. Eight generations later that element split, and the world learned what one small stone could hold: light equal to a sun, ruin equal to an apocalypse, both sleeping in the same atom. Oppenheimer quoted the Bhagavad Gita and got it exactly right—becoming, destruction, the whole wheel in a grain. There is a fierce intimacy in wearing 铀: a reminder that you, too, are dense with unspent power, capable of illumination or devastation, and the choice of which releases is entirely yours. The mine was named for Saint George and the planet for the god of sky, and the metal kept both appointments: light and ruin sleeping in one small atom. Every person is dense with unspent power, and the choosing is the entire moral life.
