Xiá (2nd tone). The Shuowen defines it as 「堅黑也」 — ‘hard black’, 形声 from 黑 with 吉 (jí) as phonetic; its root sense is the dense, unyielding black. From that ‘hard’ root it shifted to a word of mind: 《扬子·方言》 『黠，慧也。赵魏之间谓之黠』 — in the Zhao-Wei r $9.00 – Purchase Checkout Added to cart
