Dian is the very top of a mountain, the Shuo Wen giving it the peak. The Shi Jing and Tang verse set partings and visions on the dian, where one is above the clouds and close to heaven. Shan dian (mountain top) is the hermit's seat and the poet's lookout, while dian feng (peak, zenith) later named the height of any career or age.

Why this character belongs on skin

Every tradition keeps one mountain. Sinai, Olympus, Kailash—and in the Chinese imagination, the diān, that razor line where the stone ends and the sky begins.
