2 · The Character: 不 不 (bù, 4th tone; also fǒu) is pure negation, and the Shuowen Jiezi explains it by flight: 鳥飛上翔不下來也。从一,一猶天也。象形 — 'a bird soaring upward and not coming back down; from 一, since 一 here stands for heaven; pictographic.' Modern paleographers generally prefer the rival reading preserved inside the same commentarial tradition: the oracle-bone graph pictures a flower's calyx and root, which is why the Shijing line 鄂不韡韡 (Xiaoya, Changdi) is glossed by Zheng Xuan as 不當作柎 — 'here 不 should be read 柎, the calyx.' Philosophically it carries enormous load: 四十而不惑, 'at forty I was no longer confused' (Lunyu, Weizheng); 我心匪石 and 不屈, 不悔, 不惑 all pivot on it. Honest disclosure: standalone 不 reads to any Chinese speaker as a flat 'NO / NOT' — negative and grammatically unfinished — and it is the phonetic and graphic core of 否 (pǐ), the Standstill hexagram. Wear it paired (不惑, 不屈), never bare.

Cultural Story

不 is an old pictograph of a sprig or a bird, borrowed early for the flat negative no. The 論語 is built on it: 学而时习之, and 不亦说乎, is it not a pleasure. The 道德經 loves 不, 无为, 不争, the power of not doing. A single stroke flips a sentence. Before Confucius and Laozi it was just a mark; after them it framed half of Chinese thought.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 不 means 'not / no' — a bare negation with no positive body. Its resonance is boundary and refusal, but to a Chinese eye a lone 不 is a flat 'NO', grammatically unfinished and not auspicious. Honest caveat: we rate it low for nearly every use — Qian Feng's upright hand adds integrity, not positivity; wear it only paired, as 不惑 or 不屈.

In the modern world

不 is the brake pedal of every sentence: 不是 this, 不能 that, 不要 touch. A toddler's first rebellion is 不要. 不同 brands your phone case; 不好 is the weather and your mood. 不变 is the promise couples make and break. The word is so common it is nearly invisible, the small wall between yes and the world, uttered a hundred times before noon, usually without thinking.
