Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 冰 Bīng (1st tone). The Shuowen Jiezi gives the radical first — 「仌,凍也。象水凝之形」, ice is freezing, the graph a picture of water congealing — and then 「冰,水堅也。从仌从水」, 'hardened water'. The Yijing supplies the most quoted ice line in Chinese: 《易·坤》 初六 「履霜,坚冰至」 — 'you tread on frost; solid ice is coming' — with the 文言 gloss 「阴始凝也」, the yin has begun to congeal. It is a warning about small signs and large consequences. 《诗经·豳风·七月》 gives the labour: 「二之日凿冰冲冲,三之日纳于凌阴」 — in the second month they hack the ice, in the third they store it in the ice-house. 《荀子·劝学》 supplies the famous ascent: 「冰,水为之,而寒于水」 — ice is made from water yet is colder than water. 冰 is a free morpheme (冰雪, 冰心, 冰清玉洁) and reads as purity and hardness, not as death. Honest disclosure: 冰 is also modern street slang for crystal methamphetamine (冰毒).

Cultural Story

The form joined water and a point, 冰, the freeze that locks the stream. The Odes send men to '凿冰冲冲', hewing ice for the cellar. The histories note a 冰川 that blocked a pass. A heart called 冰 is one that will not warm. The word held the season's hard edge and the work of breaking it.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 冰 (bīng) means 'ice' — frozen, hardened water, and by extension purity and clarity (冰清玉洁, 'clear as ice, clean as jade'). The Shuowen says 冰 is 'water made hard', written from 仌 (the original ice graph) and 水. The Yijing warns, 'tread on frost, and solid ice is coming' — small signs, large consequences. As a tattoo it reads as luminous, uncompromising clarity. Here 冰 is set in the Yan-style (颜体) regular script of Qian Feng (钱沣, 1740–1795), the Qing censor famed for his incorruptible uprightness — his square, massively built regular was read as the man himself, 字如其人. A character of clarity in his hand becomes a statement of integrity. Be honest: a lone 冰 can read as slang for meth (冰毒) or as 'emotionally cold' (冰冷) in modern Chinese, so pair it with 心 (冰心, the ice-pure heart) or 玉 to lock the meaning to purity.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

A drink comes with an 冰块; the 冰雪 closes the road. The tray reads 冰冷 to the touch. The lake 结冰 by December; a 冰川 is shown on the nature channel. The fridge 结冰 at the back; the child licks the 冰块 and winces. The word means stop, chill, and a clear hard thing.

Why this character belongs on skin

The character doubles the word for water, as if cold had frozen the very element into a thing that holds its shape and hides its depth. 冰 is clarity and severity at once — the still surface you can read like a mirror, the cold that teaches restraint. We fear the frozen heart, but ice is also the discipline that preserves: the lake that keeps the seed through the long dark until spring dares again. To wear 冰 is to honor the cool, clear part of you that does not melt for every fire. A tattoo of this word suits the wrist or the sternum, a small cold star against the warm skin. Let it name the composure you keep when others combust, the stillness that is not absence of feeling but its disciplined form. You were not made to burn; you were made to hold, and to let the world see itself, sharpened, in your calm.
