Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 其 其 (qí, 2nd tone) is the classical Chinese 'his / its / that' — originally a pictograph of a winnowing basket (箕), borrowed as a function word. As a solo tattoo it reads like a fragment, a pronoun waiting for its sentence (like Latin 'ejus' carved alone); pair it — 其中, 其他, 其实.

Cultural Story

The shape was a basket with a stand, 其, a winnowing tray — later borrowed as the third-person particle. The Analects uses 其实, 'its truth', to cut through a rumour. The Odes set 其中 for 'within it'. The word did plain work long before grammar claimed it.

Where a Western reader can stand: 其 is the classical function word — 'his / its / that' — originally a pictograph of a winnowing basket. Shen Zengzhi was a late-Qing scholar who revived the rare chapter-cursive (章草) and layered it with the angular strength of stone inscriptions, producing a hand that looks positively archaic. A 其 in his script therefore wears its age proudly: the humble grammatical particle rendered in the most old-school, intellectual cursive in the repertoire — a tiny word that somehow looks like a manuscript leaf. Think of a Renaissance humanist writing 'ejus' in a deliberately antique minuscule. Honest caveat: 其 alone is a fragment; pair it.
