2 · The Character: 或 Huò (4th tone). The Shuowen: 「或，邦也。从囗从戈，以守一。一，地也」 — an ancient state, a walled enclosure (囗) defended by a dagger-axe (戈) over the land (一). 或 is the ancestor of 國 (state) and 域 (territory); Duan notes 或 and 國 were the same word in Zhou times. Later it shifted to the particle 'some / perhaps / or': 《易经·乾卦》 「或跃在渊」 (perhaps he leaps in the deep); 《诗经·小雅·吉日》 「或群或友」; and 或 is read as 惑 (doubt) in places. Grading: as a particle 或 is grammatical and needs partners — not a standalone. Its ancient meaning 'domain/state' is noble but obscure. Disclose both: alone it reads as 'or / perhaps', which says little; the deep sense is 'realm'. Caution.

Cultural Story

或 is the ancestor of 國. In its early form it enclosed a settlement and a spear — a realm defended — and only later shed the border to become the particle for someone, something, or. The 論語 uses it for the unknown person one might yet meet. The country, etymologically, is a maybe with a wall.
