Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 家 Jiā (1st tone). The Shuowen Jiezi glosses 家 as 「家居也。从宀,豭省声」 — a dwelling where people settle; Xu Shen's phonogram hints at the boar (豭) under the roof, the old sign of a settled homestead. The Songs make it a blessing: 《诗经·周南·桃夭》 「之子于归,宜其室家」 — 'this maiden goes home; may she suit her house and family.' The Changes devote a whole hexagram to 家人 (the family). From 'home / household' 家 became nation-house (国家) and a school of thought (百家). It is a free morpheme and reads warmly alone as 'home / family'. Disclosures: a solo 家 can also be read as the suffix '-ist / -er' (科学家 = scientist), so a literate eye may parse it as a fragment waiting for a root; 家 is also a surname. Best understood as the warm standalone 'home', not 'house' (which is 房 / 屋). Element tables assign Wood (木).

Cultural Story

The 'Great Learning' orders the world inward: 'to govern the state, first set the 家 in order' — 齐家. The 'Songs' bless the 室家. 家 meant the lineage under one roof, the unit a king had to master before a realm. The graph roofs a pig — wealth and household bound in one stroke.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 'home, family' — the settled homestead, and the family of the brush to which the Tang clerical master belonged. Honest caveats: solo 家 can read as the '-ist' suffix, and it is home, not 'house'.

In the modern world

The Spring Festival 春运 moves 家庭 home by the billion trip, and 国家 headlines the evening news. Phones ping 家里, and meetings open with 大家. The pig under the roof now means a train ticket, a flag, and a group text — the household scaled from hearth to state.

Why this character belongs on skin

A roof over two pigs — that is the oldest picture of this character, a shelter where living things are kept safe and fed. But home is never the building. Home is the gravity you feel in your chest when a certain voice says your name a certain way. The Confucians placed 家 at the root of all order in the world: tend the house, and the kingdom rights itself. To carry it on your skin is to admit you are someone's anchor, and someone is yours. It is the mark of a person who has been lost and found the thread back. Ink it where your hand rests when you sleep, and let it mean the door that is always open, the light left on, the particular warmth of being known. You don't earn home. You return to it, again and again, and the character is the returning.
