Li Bai titled one of his great poems 'Shu Dao Nan,' the difficulty of the road to Shu, and filled it with cliffs where even a bird would turn back. The 难 there is the mountain's, the traveler's, and the empire's all at once. Centuries of exiles read the line on their way into Sichuan and felt the 灾难 of distance as a personal sentence handed down by the road itself.
