维 was the guy-rope holding a net's or a tent's corner taut, and myth made it cosmic: when Gonggong butted the mountain Buzhou in his rage, the ancient cosmology says, the pillar of heaven snapped and the 地维, earth's corner-ropes, broke, tilting the world. Hence 四维, the four ropes, became a metaphor for the four social bonds whose slackening lets a state sag.

To hold the world together — that is 维. The character joins silk with a sense of tying, and the ancients spoke of the four 维, the cords that keep the cosmos from collapsing, the threads at the four corners of heaven. To lose a 维 was to feel the whole structure sway. To carry 维 is to claim your place among the cords, the one small strand whose tension keeps something beloved from falling. We think of ourselves as separate, free-floating; the truth is we are load-bearing, whether we know it or not. A parent is a 维 to a child; a friend is a 维 to a friend in the dark.
