2 · The Character: 渐 漸 / 渐 (jiàn, 4th tone) is another river name in disguise. The Shuowen Jiezi: 「漸，水。出丹陽黟南蠻中，東入海。从水，斬聲」 — the Jian River, which Duan Yucai identifies with the source waters of today's Qiantang. Its famous meaning comes from the Yijing, where 漸 is hexagram 53. Kong Yingda's 《正義》 explains it exactly: 「漸者，不速之名。凡物有變移，徐而不速，謂之漸」 — 'gradual' is the name for change that moves slowly and is not hurried. The line texts follow a wild goose climbing stage by stage: 「鴻漸于干」, 「鴻漸于磐」, 「鴻漸于陸」, 「鴻漸于陵」. 《書·禹貢》 preserves the water sense in 「東漸于海」. Grammatically 渐 is a bound morpheme in modern Chinese: 逐漸, 漸漸, 循序漸進, 防微杜漸. Honest disclosure: alone it functions as an adverb, closer to tattooing 'gradually' than a noun-like virtue, and 防微杜漸 ('block the trouble while it is still small') gives it a wary edge, not a purely gentle one.
