Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

The gourd dipper still scoops from village water vats as a 水瓢, while children chase 瓢虫, ladybugs, across the vegetable patch. Weather reports reach for the old image in downpours — 瓢泼大雨, rain pouring as if flung from a ladle — and everyone knows exactly how hard that is.

Why this character belongs on skin

Confucius praised his favorite disciple Yan Hui with one image: a bowl of rice, a gourd of water, a back-alley hovel—and joy that no wealth could buy away. The character 瓢 is that gourd, the ladle made by drying a hollow fruit and splitting it, humanity's oldest spoon. Half of it is the gourd's own shape, a vessel curved like a swan's neck over water. A ladle is humble cosmology: it draws from the common well and shares the same water with every mouth that comes. There is a Buddhist plainness in that, the enlightenment of enough—cold water, clear mind, no acquisition required. You have drunk from fancier cups and been thirstier for it. This character is the vow to travel light: one scoop at a time, one day at a time, the simple sweetness of water lifted in your own two hands.
