2 · The Character: 面 面 (miàn, traditional 麵 for flour) is defined by the Shuowen Jiezi (《说文解字》 面部) as '面，顏前也。从𦣻，象人面形' — the front of the face, drawn as a pictograph of a human visage. In the oracle-bone script the graph already shows an eye set inside a face outline. The Book of Documents warns against hollow agreement: 《书·益稷》 '汝無面從，退有後言' — do not consent to my face, then grumble behind my back. The Zuozhuan observes '人心之不同，如其面焉' (hearts differ as faces differ), while the Shijing teaches '匪面命之，言提其耳' (not just face-to-face, but ear-pulling instruction). As a free morpheme 面 means face, front, and direction; 面山而居 (facing the mountain) and 面壁 (facing the wall in meditation) lend it a contemplative air. Honest disclosure: to a modern reader a lone 面 can also read as 'flour' (面食) or as 面子 — 'face' in the social, reputation sense, which risks vanity. It is not a death or funeral character.

Cultural Story

At the siege of Gaixia the Chu army woke to 四面楚歌, songs of home rising from every 面 of the ring, and Xiang Yu knew the end had come. The 面前 of his tent and the 方面 of the enemy he could no longer read. To be surrounded on every 面 was, for the 霸王, to lose the war in a single night of song.
