Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 向 Xiang (4th tone). The Shuowen Jiezi glosses 向 as 「北出牖也。从宀从口」— a window cut through the north wall of a house — and Xu Shen himself cites the Book of Songs, 《诗经·谳风·七月》 「塞向墅户」, 'stop up the north window, plaster the door', the farmer's rite of turning a dwelling away from winter. From that literal aperture the word grew into everything Chinese means by orientation: to face, to turn toward, direction (方向), and finally aspiration (志向). 《庄子·秋水》 has 「望洋向若而叹」; 《易·说卦》 says the sage 「單明而治」 — governs by facing the light. 向 is a free morpheme and stands alone honestly. Two disclosures: 向 is a common Chinese surname (Xiang), so literate readers may first read a solo character as a family name; and grammatically it doubles as the preposition 'toward', which by itself can feel like a function word rather than a statement. Element tables mostly assign Water; a minority assign Fire.
Cultural Story
向 was toward. Li Shangyin, ill at ease as evening came, "drove toward the ancient mound" -- 向晚意不适,驱车登古原. The word carried the facing of one thing by another: a door's orientation, a heart's lean. 向来 meant always, from of old. It named the direction taken and the habit long held, the turn of body and of mind.
Where a Western reader can stand: Tang Yin — 'Scholar Tang' of the Ming Four Masters — was as brilliant a calligrapher as painter, his running script loose and confident. Set 向 in his hand and it reads as a window and a direction: 'toward,' aspiration (向往). Western wearers get a quiet, forward-leaning mark of intent, like an arrow without the arrowhead.
