帮 is the simplified 幫, originally the upper part of a shoe (the 鞋帮), the cloth or leather that wraps the foot. From that enclosing shape came 'to enclose and assist,' then a group that bands together - a guild of artisans, a boatmen's 帮 on the Yangtze.
