Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 城 Chéng (2nd tone). The Shuowen Jiezi defines 城 as 「以盛民也。从土从成,成亦声」 — 'that which holds the people; from earth and 成 (completion), 成 also giving the sound.' A wall is not stone for its own sake: it is a container for a population. The Songs record the building — 《诗·大雅·文王有声》 「筑城伊淢」 — and the Guoyu supplies the proverb: 《国语·周语下》 「众心成城,众口铄金」, 'united hearts make a wall; united mouths melt metal.' Mencius then weighs walls against people: 《孟子·公孙丑下》 「三里之城,七里之郭…是天时不如地利,地利不如人和也」. In the Changes the single line naming 城 is a warning — 《易·泰》上六 「城复于隍」, the wall crumbling back into its own moat. 城 is a free morpheme. Disclosures: to a Chinese eye 城 first reads 'city' and often looks like half a place-name (长城, 北京城); 倾城 describes a beauty who topples a city; 城下之盟 is a treaty signed under duress. Element tables assign Earth (土).
Cultural Story
:The Odes raise the 城 against the raid; the 长城 ran thousands of li to hold the nomads north. The 城墙 of Chang'an enclosed the world's largest city, and the 京城 of every dynasty was the empire made visible in brick. The character is earth and a defended settlement.
Where a Western reader can stand: A wall is only a way of holding people: 城 in Wang Duo's flooding ink, written by the man whose walls fell. Western readers should know the 'city' reading and the shadows (倾城, 城下之盟); the hand is authentic.

Why this character belongs on skin
A wall is a promise written in stone: we will stay, we will guard, we will not be moved by the first cold wind. The character sets a mound of earth into a citadel — chéng, the city wall, the ring that turns a gathering of people into a place. The old capitals rose behind walls so thick they made their own weather. To be walled is to be claimed, to belong to something with edges. We build them around our hearts too, and call it safety. To carry this is to honor the protector in you, the boundary you keep. Let it rest on your skin as a quiet rampart, the line no one crosses unasked. And when you are ready, let the needle raise the wall in ink — the city, kept safe, on you.
