Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源
2 · The Character: 故 Gu (4th tone). The Shuowen Jiezi reads 「故, 使为之也」 — that which makes something so, its cause. Xu Kai's note glosses it 「故使之也」. The graph recurs across the classics as 'reason' and 'the old': the Appended Statements of the Changes say 「是故知幽明之故」 (therefore we know the causes of the hidden and the manifest); the Hexagram of the same, Za Gua, contrasts 「革, 去故也; 鼎, 取新也」 (revolution rejects the old, the cauldron takes the new). Name-lore gives Wood (木) and nine Kangxi strokes. Here lies the honest route: 故 also means death — in history, 「物故」 means to die; and 故 can read as 'therefore' or 'on purpose'. As a tattoo it is nostalgic, not negative, but never market it as 'eternal'. Pair 故 with 新 (old and new) for a balanced, intentional piece.
Cultural Story
故 reaches back. 故人 is the friend of years; 故乡 the village you left. 故事 was first 'the old matter,' then the tale told of it; 故宫 the 'former palace' of the Ming emperors, now a museum of dust and lacquer. 故意 is to act on purpose, with the old intent. The word is memory wearing the face of cause.
Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 故 is the cause that makes a thing so, and 'the old' — the Latin causa and the prisca of ancestors. The honest shade: in 物故 it means 'to die', so it is no word for 'eternity'. Pair it with 新 'new' and you hold the whole wheel of old and new in one glyph; in Wang Duo's ink-drenched cursive, wear it as memory, not as forever.
