Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 名 Míng (2nd tone). 《说文·口部》: 「名,自命也。从口从夕。夕者,冥也。冥不相见,故以口自名。」 — 'to name oneself; from mouth and dusk. Dusk means dark; in darkness people cannot see one another, so one names oneself with the mouth.' The etymology is a whole scene: night, two travellers, a spoken name standing in for a face. 《老子》 sets it against the Way — 「名可名,非常名」. 《论语·子路》 makes it political: 「名不正,则言不顺;言不顺,则事不成」 — if names are not rectified, speech does not follow and nothing is accomplished. 名 is a free morpheme: 名字 name, 名分 one's rightful station, 名声 reputation, 有名 famous. Honest disclosure: the reputation sense is strong enough that 名 alone can read as vanity — 名利 is 'fame and profit', 名人 a celebrity. It is also an ordinary measure word for persons. Never sell it as 'destiny'; that is 命.

Cultural Story

名 was the name and the fame. Laozi opened the Daodejing with "the name that can be named is not the constant name" -- 名可名,非常名. Confucius held that "when the name is right, the words follow" -- 名正言顺. The word carried the label and the renown, the tag on a thing and the light around a person who had earned one.

Where a Western reader can stand: Wang Qia was a Jin-dynasty cursive master of the Wang clan — the family of Wang Xizhi — whose free running script feels like a signature more than a inscription. Set 名 in that hand and it reads exactly as what it is: a name, a mark of identity and the fame that attends a name. Western wearers can read it as a personal name-mark or, more boldly, a claim of renown.

In the modern world

A 名字 prints on the ID; a 著名 scientist gives the talk. The 名声 travels ahead of the restaurant; a 名人 fills the interview. The 姓名 goes on the form. The word does the day's labeling -- the given name, the reputation, the celebrity, the full title. It names what a person is called and what they are known for, from the register to the headline.
