Why this character belongs on skin

囊 is a picture of a bag itself—soft body cinched at both ends, drawn in strokes that bulge with what they hold. In the old tales, the囊 holds destiny: the clever scholar who poked a hole in his firefly-filled pouch to read by its glow; the strategist Mao Sui, who said a talent in the bag shows its point at once. A pouch is a humble thing, but everything travels in one—grain, coins, letters, the three-thousand poems of a lifetime. And the Buddhist image is sharper still: the self is just a skin-bag, said the monk, until what you fill it with gives it worth.
