Cultural Story
弊 is the fraud that hides in a worn seam — the 作弊 of a student who wrote the answer on his wrist, the 弊端 a dynasty tolerated until it fell. The character pairs cloth and edge: the small flaw at the hem that lets the whole garment go. A defect, then a disease.

Read the story behind the character
作弊 is the exam scandal a university expels for, 弊端 the loophole a regulator promises to close, 利弊 the pros and cons a consultant lists in two columns. The wrist has become a watch and a cheat sheet on a phone, but the small flaw at the hem is still where the trouble starts.
Why this character belongs on skin
A dog crouched over a bundle—some ancient picture of篡改, of something furtive done to something shared—and 弊 hardened into the word for abuse, fraud, the rot inside institutions. 作弊 is cheating on the exam; 流弊, the harm that flows downstream for generations; 利弊, the profit-and-harm weighed on every honest scale. Every empire kept clerks whose whole career was this character: the grain official skimming, the border captain selling passes, the modern euphemisms—irregularities, backhanders, quid pro quo. Confucius said the rectified name makes the rectified state; 弊 is what happens when names and things quietly divorce. But the character also turns inward. We cheat ourselves first—shortcuts taken on our own behalf, the promise diluted at night when no one watched. You know your own small frauds; everyone does. Naming them is the beginning of 弊病's only cure. There is a strange relief in refusing the easy crookedness, in standing where it costs. Wear this character as a watchman's lantern, not a confession: see the cheat, decline it, sleep well. Straight is its own reward.
