潜 joins water with 朁, and the Shuowen gives 涉水也, to ford or go under water. The Classic of Changes praises the dragon 潜在渊, hidden in the deep, biding its time before it rises. This became the great image of 潜伏 (lurking, hiding) power and of the worthy who waits unseen. Confucian and Daoist writers alike valued the 潜 mind, withdrawn and gathering strength. To be 潜 was not to be absent but to be stored, like water held in the earth, ready to emerge when the moment was right.
