Why this character belongs on skin
A fire above a mouth: light falling upon something and giving it back to the world. 照 means to shine on, to illuminate, to reflect — a mirror-word, a lamp-word. Buddhism took it as its own: 照见, to illuminate and see, the phrase that opens the Heart Sutra, where the bodhisattva looks into the nature of things and is freed by what the light reveals. But the word is warmer than philosophy. It is the lamp left on for someone coming home late; the moon on water, which the Zen poets loved because the water holds the whole moon without spilling a drop. To illuminate is a form of love — you make a thing visible and thereby real. To wear this character is to be the one who shines on others without demanding the light return, and to trust that whatever is truly in you will reflect itself, clear and unashamed, when the fire is lit.
