Cultural Story

The se was a twenty-five-string zither whose sound classical poets found subtly sorrowful. The Book of Songs pairs 琴瑟 for marital harmony, and Li Shangyin's 'Brocade Zither' made the instrument a riddle of lost youth — fifty strings, each recalling a blossom-like year.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

The character now works mostly as atmosphere. A windy evening turns 萧瑟, bleak and rustling; cold makes people 瑟瑟发抖, shivering — a phrase livestream comments love. Yet 琴瑟 still names a harmonious couple, so the old zither quietly scores both romance and chill.

Why this character belongs on skin

Fifty strings, then twenty-five. The 瑟 is an ancient Chinese zither, and its origin story is the saddest in music: the emperor's daughter played so beautifully that he could not bear the grief her music stirred in him, and he broke her fifty-stringed instrument in half. So the 瑟 carries twenty-five strings and all of mourning besides. Li Shangyin's most beloved poem opens with it — the brocade zither, for no reason, fifty strings — and meditates on memories that shimmer and dissolve. To 瑟 is also to shiver, the slight tremble of a body in cold wind or strong feeling. Imagine wearing an instrument, and not just any instrument but one born broken, one whose sound is inseparable from loss and from the strange pleasure of loss when it is rendered in music. This is ink for those who know that some sorrows deserve to be tuned, played, and kept.
