Cultural Story

矢 is the arrow itself, a stick-split pictograph from oracle-bone times. The Book of Songs arms the hunter: 既张我弓,既挟我矢 — 'I have bent my bow, I have taken my arrow.' Because an arrow flies straight and never returns, the word came to mean a vow: to 矢志 is to stake one's purpose — spoken once, aimed, and loosed.

Common words & phrases

In the modern world

Arrows survive in fixed phrases and sports. A minister 矢口否认 (flatly denies) everything at the press conference; graduates vow 矢志不渝 — unswerving resolve — in their yearbooks. Archery clubs and costume dramas restore the 飞矢 (flying arrow) to the screen, and historians explaining siegecraft still describe 矢石 (arrows and stones) raining down from ancient city walls.

Why this character belongs on skin

The bow is patience. The arrow is the rest. 矢 is that arrow — the straight shaft, the character itself a sliver aimed and true, fletching at the tail, point at the world. In the old armies it was the unit of oath: 矢志, to swear an aim and never waver from it. To carry 矢 is to admit you are pointed at something, that a life without a target is only a stick. It is the mark of intention, the quiet violence of direction. We loose ourselves at love, at duty, at the future we cannot see but trust. Ink it where the line of your arm ends. Let it say you have chosen a course, taken the breath, and released — certain, for once, of exactly where you mean to land.
