Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 是 Shi (4th tone). The Shuowen Jiezi defines 「是, 直也; 从日正」 — straight, upright; from sun and correct. Duan Yucai explains: 'ten eyes piercing concealment is 直; taking the sun as the measure is 是 — nothing under heaven is straighter than the sun.' From 'upright' came 'right/correct' and the demonstrative 'this'. The Changes, Wei Ji, warns 「有孚失是」 (having faith, you lose the right); the Odes, Garden with Peach, ask 「彼人是哉」 (is that man right?); the Rites, Qu Li, bind all propriety to 「明是非」 (clarify right and wrong). Name-lore seldom lists 是 in the five-elements tables; by its sun-root it is reasonably assigned Fire (火) — (verify). As a free morpheme 是 is truth and uprightness. Honest route: in modern speech 是 is just the verb 'to be'; disclose the classical spine is solar rectitude.

Cultural Story

是 is the word that fixes. 是非 is right and wrong, the scale of the censor; 事实 the matter as it stands. 但是 the 'but' that turns the sentence; 就是 the 'exactly.' The word is the copula that makes a claim a thing — the sun 是 round, the man 是 guilty. The Shuowen sees the sun straight, the true set down.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 是 is the Latin 'rectus' — not the verb 'to be' but the adjective 'right, true, straight'. Its pictograph is a sundial: 日 (sun) over 正 (upright), straightness measured against the sun's path. The Yijing's Hexagram Dà Yǒu (14) commands 遏惡揚善, 'check evil, exalt the good' — righteousness as a daily act. (Modern Chinese, of course, uses 是 mostly as the copula 'is', which is the honest trap to disclose.) Bao Shichen is the exact hand. His entire method rested on 中鋒, 'center-tip' writing — keeping the brush true to its core so the line has bone — and his stele-school revival prized exactly this solar, squared rectitude over soft elegance. Put his running-cursive to 是 and the character stops being grammar and becomes a posture: upright because it is measured against the sun. For a Western wearer, 是 is not 'to be' but 'to be right' — a quiet claim of alignment, classical and unpretentious.

In the modern world

但是 is the 'however' of every memo; 就是 the emphasis. 可是 the shrug; 是否 the poll. 总是 the nag; 事实 the check. The word props the whole language — the yes, the correction, the link. From the debate to the form, 是 is the small hinge everything turns on, the assertion that something is so, and not otherwise.
