Why this character belongs on skin

Before the table, the beam, the carriage — there is the cái, the raw timber still smelling of the forest, not yet shaped into anything useful. The word also means the stuff a person is made of: your timber, your grain, the particular wood you were cut from. We spend years being planed into roles we didn't choose.
