Cultural Story
In ancient times the southerners of the Yangtze gorges gave big river craft their own name: the Fangyan lexicon records that in Chu lands any very large vessel was called a ge, a barge capable of swallowing crews and cargo a small fishing skiff could never carry. Granary barges crowded Han-era river towns, and later poets watching regattas on the Xiang River described hundreds of hulls racing bow to bow.
Common words & phrases
- 百舸 hundred barges
- 轻舸 light boat
Read the story behind the character
On autumn weekends in Changsha students recite the famous line about hundred barges contending midstream, then rent a light boat themselves and paddle past paddleboarders on the Xiang. Harbor webcams in Wuhan still caption container ships with the old word, so a traveler filming the barges below the Yangtze bridge hears it everywhere.
Why this character belongs on skin
舸 is the great vessel — 百舸争流, a hundred boats racing the current, banners flying, oars flashing in the spring flood. Where the small skiff hugs the bank and the fisherman keeps his feet nearly dry, the 舸 commits: deep water, real cargo, a crew with names, crossings that cannot be undone. The young poets of a century ago put their ambition aboard one and raced all comers down the Xiang River, because youth is precisely the belief that the current can be beaten. Every life eventually chooses its hull — the safe raft that never leaves sight of shore, or the ship built for open sea — and the wind, which watches everything, treats them very differently. A big boat takes genuine bravery to launch and heavier grief to sink, which is exactly why it is worth building at all. Choose your vessel honestly this year. Then shove off from everything shallow.
