龟 is the tortoise, perhaps the most consequential animal in early Chinese writing: oracle bones themselves were tortoise plastrons, cracked in fire so kings could read the future. The creature signified endurance and cosmic order — heaven round, earth square like a shell. The Zhui of the south was said to carry sacred grass on its back.
