Li Bai's 赠汪伦 ends with the line that the peach-blossom lake, deep as it is, cannot match Wang Lun's send-off: a poem 赠, given, as a parting gift. 赠言, words of advice, and 回赠, a gift returned, all keep that gesture of handing something across a threshold of leaving. The poem given at parting is the character's purest form, a gift of breath.
