The phrase 寝食 (sleep and food) described one's whole daily life; to lose it was to be consumed by worry. Tombs, too, were called 寝 — resting places for the dead.

A good night lets you 安寝 (sleep peacefully) instead of scrolling your phone. When 寝食 (sleep and food) fall apart during a deadline, friends joke that work has eaten your life.
Why this character belongs on skin
The day lets go of your shoulders. The lamp is out. 寝 is the character for that surrender—the bedchamber, sleep itself, the room where a human being agrees, nightly, to be unconscious and unguarded and thoroughly mortal. Confucius complained he dreamed no more of the Duke of Zhou—old age arriving, announced by the loss of dreams. Even kings are met only as sleepers by their own minds; no rank holds at three in the morning. There is an old tenderness in the phrase 就寝, to go to bed—a small ceremony, the day formally concluded. Sleep is the nightly practice of the one thing every warrior must master: letting go without dying. To wear 寝 is to keep faith with that practice. Rest is not weakness; it is the rhythm the body was written in. Ink it near the pulse and let it say what it says: even I put it down. Even I. Every night, and pick it up again at dawn.
