Cultural Story
When Xuanzang returned from India in the seventh century with a wagon of sutras, the Tang court built a yi chang, a translation assembly, where hundreds of hands turned Sanskrit into Chinese by the lamp. The character yi, originally the interpreter at the frontier, became the patient bridge between tongues. To yi was to carry a meaning across a river it could not swim, the scholar's vow that no truth need drown for want of a word.

Why this character belongs on skin
Two languages meet at a border, and one voice carries the meaning across—that is 译, to translate, to interpret, the act of making the strange intelligible. The character is speech and a watching, the attentive mediation between what was said and what can be heard. The ancient interpreters stood between empires; the lover stands between two hearts that nearly miss. There is a quiet heroism in translation, the refusal to let meaning die in the gap. The Buddhist missionaries 译 the sutras so a foreign truth could live in a new tongue. To wear 译 is to claim the role of bridge, the one who carries understanding across divides others fear to cross. Some build walls at every border. This mark is the passage you kept open, the meaning you refused to lose. Let it rest where you met the other and brought them home, the translation that became you. Not two languages. One, finally, understood. The word crossed. You carried it.
