### Soundlí (also xī for the blessing sense) — lí (2nd tone); xī where it stands for 禧 'blessing'. Free-standing morpheme ### Original meaningLí (2nd tone), read xī where it stands for blessing. The Shuowen Jiezi's definition is one of the warmest in the dictionary: 「釐,家福也。从里𠩺聲」 — 'the blessing of a household', from 里 (dwelling / village) with 𠩺 as phonetic; Duan Yucai spells it out — 「家福者,家居獲祐也」, the luck that rests on a house and the people in it — and insists it is not simply 禧, even though Han texts borrow it for that. The Shuowen sense is the rare one in practice; the ordinary classical use is 'to set in order': 《書·堯典》「允釐百工,庶績咸熙」 — truly he ordered the hundred offices, and all the works shone; and again 《書·堯典》「釐降二女于媯汭」. It is also 'to give': 《詩·大雅·既醉》「其僕維何?釐爾女士」 (毛傳: 釐,予也). And by a different road it is the smallest measure there is: 《漢書·東方朔傳》「失之毫釐,差以千里」 — off by a hair at the start, out by a thousand li at the end. Kangxi: 18 strokes (里 radical + 11). Wuxing: naming tables assign Fire (火) (verify). Honest disclosure: in modern printing 釐 has been absorbed by 厘, so on the street the graph reads as the unit — a thousandth, a hair's breadth. ### The structure (形聲 · 从里𠩺聲 — the dwelling radical 里 with 𠩺 as phonetic; the dwelling is why Xu Shen glosses it 'household blessing')①里lǐvillage / dwellingthe radical — the house the blessing sits on②釐líhousehold blessingXu Shen's gloss: 家福也③禧xǐblessingthe near-twin; Han texts borrow 釐 to write it④毫釐háolía hair's breadththe character's other life: the smallest measure ### In use todayItemReading / meaningNoteReadinglí (2nd tone); xī for the blessing sensetwo readings, two historiesCore sensehousehold blessing; to set in order; a thousandththe Shuowen sense is the rare oneGrammarfree in classical, archaic today釐定 / 釐正 to rectify; 毫釐 a hair's breadth; modern form 厘Tattoo fitcaution — the Shuowen sense is lovely, the modern reading is a unitsay which one you mean ### Closest words in English — and what each misses - Blessing — 禧/福 hold 'blessing' outright; 釐's Shuowen gloss is 家福, the specific blessing of a household, and it is rare in texts - Joy — 喜 holds 'joy'; 釐 meets it only in posthumous names (釐公 = 僖公), not in meaning - Centimetre / unit — 厘 is the modern form and means the thousandth; 釐 is the old graph that now carries that sense - To order / govern — 治/整 hold 'to govern, to tidy'; 釐's common classical sense is close to this — and further from blessing than buyers expectAn honest note on grammar. Cultural Story
The Qing court, pressed by the Taiping war in 1853, imposed the 釐金, a transit tax on goods moving through the passes, and the 釐 became the levy that fed an army and rankled every merchant on the road. The 釐定 of rules followed as the state tried to order the chaos. From that tax the character kept the sense of a fine reckoning imposed from above.
Where a Western reader can stand: 釐 (lí) has one of the Shuowen's warmest definitions — 『家福也』, the blessing that rests on a household — but in real texts it mostly means 'to set in order', and in modern printing it has become 厘, the word for one thousandth. So a single 釐 on skin will read to most Chinese eyes as a unit of measure, not a blessing. If you want blessing unmistakably, 禧 (xī) is the character; if you want the household, 家人 (37) is the hexagram. 釐 is the scholar's choice, and it asks to be explained.

A lawyer 釐清 the clauses of a disputed contract, a ruler marks a length in 釐米, and an editor 釐正 a misprint before press. The 釐 now works a desk and a drawing. The character that once named a wartime toll now names the careful sorting of a sentence and the small division a rule divides, the old fine reckoning turned to paperwork.
