夜 is night. The Tang poet 张继 wrote 『月落乌啼霜满天』 of a 夜 (night) on the river at anchor; 昼夜 (day and night) measured a siege or a vigil. 深夜 (late night) lamps lit the 科举 (exam) candidate cramming in his cell; 夜色 (night scene) cooled a scholar's garden.
