Etymology & Meaning · 字义溯源

2 · The Character: 食 食 (shí, 2nd tone; also sì, 'to feed', and yì in the Han name 酈食其). Shuowen Jiezi, chapter 5: the received text reads 一米也。从皀亼聲。或說亼皀也, but Duan Yucai emends the first graph — 各本作一米也…今定爲亼米也。亼,集也,集衆米而成食也 — 'gathered grain: to collect the many grains and make food of them.' Confucius makes it the lesser aim: 《論語·衛靈公》 君子謀道不謀食, 'the noble one plans for the Way, not for his dinner.' The Hanshu makes it the greatest: 王者以民爲天,而民以食爲天 (酈食其傳) — 'the king takes the people as heaven, and the people take food as heaven.' Kangxi: 9 strokes, and it heads 食部. Honest disclosure, and there is a good deal of it: 食 is also the word for an eclipse — 《易·豐》 日中則昃,月盈則食, the moon 'eaten'. 食言 means to break your word (《書·湯誓》 朕不食言; 《爾雅·釋詁》 食,僞也). 血食 means sacrificial offerings at a tomb (《史記·陳涉世家》 至今血食), a genuinely funerary register. And 嗟來之食 is charity handed over with contempt.

Cultural Story

食 (shí) is a pictogram of a vessel heaped with grain, steaming under a cover, with a mouth above to eat. 《説文解字》 reads it 亼米也, “grain gathered,” rooting the word in the daily act of taking nourishment from a bowl.

Where a Western reader can stand: Where a Western reader can stand: 食 is the meal — many grains gathered under a lid — and, in 民以食为天, food is heaven to the people. Cui Yuan's restrained hand keeps it disciplined; but 食 also means an eclipse (日食) and 'to break a promise' (食言), and 血食 is a funerary phrase, so pair it to keep the culinary sense.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

食 remains the word for eating and food. We choose healthy 食物 (food), buy packaged 食品 (provisions), store 粮食 (grain), mind our 饮食 (diet), feel 食欲 (appetite), and check that something is 食用 (edible) before tasting it.

Why this character belongs on skin

Hunger is the first honest thing the body tells you. 食 is its answer — the character for eating, for food, the daily sacrament the Confucians elevated to ritual. A proper meal was a proper life; the gentleman ate with reverence, knowing nourishment is a gift, not a given. There is a deep sensuality here, the steam off rice, the shared bowl that turns strangers into kin. Buddhist monks begged their 食 to learn dependence and gratitude; Christian hermit and Daoist recluse alike broke bread to remember they were flesh. To wear 食 is to honor the body that carries your soul, the appetite that proves you are alive. Put it near the heart or the mouth, a small devotion: I will feed what is mine. To eat well, to eat gladly, is its own kind of prayer, said three times a day, and the ink is the thanks I say between the bites.
