Cultural Story
帏 is a curtain or a small pouch hung about the bed, and the Shuowen groups it with screens and canopies. In Tang poetry the 羅帏, a gauze curtain, veils the lady's chamber, and Li Bai sighs that moonlight enters the 帷帏 uninvited. The word belongs to the intimate architecture of sleep and privacy - the soft boundary drawn around a person at rest. To part the 帏 was to step from the public hall into the secrets of the inner room.

Read the story behind the character
Though 帏 is literary today, its compounds linger in elegant speech. The 帷帏 and 帏幕 are the draped curtains of a stage or a ceremonial hall, and the classical 羅帏 survives in period dramas as the gauze that hides a bride. A reader meeting 帏 in a poem pictures a soft hanging swaying in lamplight - a word that still furnishes the bedroom scenes of historical costume shows and operas.
Why this character belongs on skin
Wéi is the curtain — cloth radical beside a word of screening, the fabric hung around a bed, a sedan chair, a woman's chamber in the old novels. It is the radical of intimacy: what happens behind wéi belongs to no witness. Chinese poetry made it electric — a lifted curtain, a shadow behind gauze, the whole trembling geography of desire mapped onto a rectangle of silk. But curtains do two things, and the second is holier: they make a room where the self can be unarmored. Every tradition builds them — the tabernacle's veil, the confessional's grate, the walled garden. Not to hide from love but to make love possible, because there is no undressing, literal or otherwise, in a bright field. A tattoo of wéi is for what you keep veiled: the interior country where you are entirely yourself. Wear it and you declare the secret rather than surrender it. Some doors exist so that someone, eventually, can be let through.
