原 was the source, the spring before it ran into a stream. Han Yu wrote an essay titled 原道, tracing the Way back to its root. The open 草原 stretched before the frontier generals; the 中原 was the central plain where dynasties rose and fell. To ask 原来 was to ask what was there from the first. The word points to the beginning of a thing.

Read the story behind the character

A delay needs a 原因 before a boss accepts it; a negotiator holds to a 原则 he will not trade. Tourists drive onto the 草原 at dawn for the light. A 原始 forest is fenced off as a reserve. Someone says "原来如此" when the trick is explained. The word does constant work in explanation, marking the source, the rule, and the open ground alike.

Why this character belongs on skin

All rivers defend a single secret: where they began. The character holds both the open plain and the spring that rises from it, the flat wide earth and the first water that breaks the surface. In the old histories it is the starting place, the uncarved source before the current learned its name. The Daoists call the origin the mother of ten thousand things, the silence before the first note. To know your source is to know the plain you walked out of and the spring that still feeds you. A tattoo here is a compass pointing home — not to a house but to a beginning, the raw field before ambition flattened it. Wear it as a permission to return, to stand again on the wide ground with nothing built yet. The ink remembers what your memory pretends to forget: you came from somewhere whole, and that place is still inside you.
