2 · The Character: 会 会 (huì, 4th tone; traditional 會) is, in Xu Shen, the gathering: 合也。从亼从曾省 — 'to assemble, to unite; from 亼 (collect) and abbreviated 曾.' It means 'to meet, to gather, to understand.' The classics make it the auspicious confluence: the Yijing (乾卦) '亨者，嘉之會也' (prosperity is the beautiful gathering); the Shujing (禹贡) '灉沮會同' (the waters meet and join); the Hongfan '會其有極' (gather to the one pole); the Liji (乐记) '會以聚衆' (the gathering assembles the multitude); the Zhouli (大宰) '大朝覲會同.' As a free morpheme 会 means 'to meet, gather, can,' positive in 聚会, 机会, 融会. Honest disclosure: 会 is a verb-noun of meeting; on skin it is a dense, balanced character and reads as 'gathering/meeting.' Pair it with 心 (会心) or 聚 if you want the 'meeting of minds' sense explicit; in Japanese it is kai / au. The Wuxing attribution is confident: 会 is Water (水), the converging flow.

Cultural Story

會 showed a gathering under a roof, to meet, to assemble, the confluence of paths and people. The 說文 reads it as to gather, to reckon. 社會 was the community at the altar; 會計 the one who reckoned the accounts. 開會 is the council convoked. The character is the coming-together, the moment separate lines become a roomful, the count taken when everyone arrives.
