Cultural Story

In the 孟子, the sage says only the truly virtuous can 践形, give full expression to the form heaven gave them, the outward living of an inward nature. 践 is to tread that form like a path. Later ages widened it to 实践, practice, and 践约, keeping a promise made. To tread one's given form was the sage's name for a life well lived.

In the modern world

At a workshop, a teacher urges 实践, putting ideas into practice, while a marcher 践行, acts on, a pledge and a friend 践约, honors an appointment, at the café. A careless boot 践踏, tramples, a flowerbed and a harsh word can 作践, spoil, a good name. The philosopher's treading of one's nature now walks a promise and a garden.

Why this character belongs on skin

There is a bluntness in 践 that modern life has nearly edited out. It means to tread — literally to put your foot down on something — and from that physical fact it grew its finer meaning: to fulfill, to carry out, to make a promise true with your actual body. 践约 is to tread upon your word until it holds weight. 践行 is to walk your principles out into the street where they can be tested. The character sets a foot against a root, a step taken against the old stock of things, and there is its whole philosophy: nothing is real until it has been stood upon. Philosophers can debate the good; the soldier who keeps his oath and the friend who shows up have already settled it. To wear 践 is to choose the soles of the feet over the movements of the mouth — to be someone whose promises, once made, are always arrived at.
