Cultural Story

Zhang Yuanji's Commercial Press produced the Baina Ben, the patchwork edition of the Twenty-Four Histories, collating scattered editions into one trustworthy text, its name borrowed from the monk's na robe stitched from many scraps. The learned patchwork honoured the humbler cloth it recalled. To na was to sew, and to gather, at once.

Read the story behind the character

In the modern world

In a costume film an old monk calls himself laona, the humble self-name of his cloth, while a temple displays a nayi patchwork robe. A grandmother keeps a baina quilt of old shirts, and a villager still naxie, stitches shoes, by the door. The character ties the sewing needle to the gathering of whatever is torn.

Why this character belongs on skin

It begins in the sound of a needle through rough cloth, late at night, a monk in a cold room stitching scraps into something whole. The character 衲 carries the radical for clothing, but its soul is the patchwork robe of a Chan Buddhist monk— garments sewn from discarded fragments, each piece a life someone else had finished with. This is humility worn as honor: to be called 老衲, old monk, is to claim nothing and own everything worth having. The patched robe says what silk never can— that a life stitched from losses can be warmer than one cut from a single bolt. There is a freedom in it, the Christian monastic knew it too, the bare brotherhood of enough. Beneath your skin the ink could sit like a stitch: quiet, deliberate, holding the torn places together.
