The Shuowen defines 童 as a male slave — the ancient form showed an eye pierced by a tattooing blade, branding convicts. Over time the brand faded and only youth remained: 童子 boys served at rituals, and Daoist tales of uncorrupted children made 童心 a symbol of the innocent heart.
